AI for recruitment agencies: faster shortlists without losing the human read

Recruitment runs on volume and speed, exactly where AI helps, and on judgement and relationships, exactly where it shouldn't take over. The honest split for Irish agencies, including the one place the EU AI Act bites.

Recruitment is a volume game with a human core: hundreds of CVs and messages on one side, judgement and relationships on the other. AI is genuinely useful on the volume side and genuinely dangerous if you let it near the core, so the agencies getting value from it are the ones who are clear about the split.

Where it speeds things up: first-pass CV screening and summarising long CVs into a quick read; drafting job descriptions, candidate updates, and client emails; reformatting CVs to your house template; helping with boolean and search strings; and pulling together interview prep notes from a brief. This is the administrative weight that slows a desk down, and handing it off frees consultants for the calls and conversations that actually place people.

Where the human decides, full stop: who is a fit, who to put forward, and how a candidate is treated. There is also a hard compliance line here. Under the EU AI Act, AI used to screen or rank candidates for employment is a named high-risk use, so the moment AI is making or heavily steering the hiring decision, you have obligations most agencies will not want to take on. Keep AI as an assistant that drafts and summarises, with a person making every call, and you stay well clear of that line.

Bias and data protection are the other two to watch. An AI that learns from past hiring can quietly reproduce its patterns, so anything touching screening needs human oversight and a sceptical eye. Candidate data is personal data, so the same confidentiality discipline applies as everywhere else: approved tools, clear rules on what goes in, and no pasting CVs into a personal chatbot account.

The setup is the familiar one: a couple of approved tools, a short acceptable-use policy that names the high-risk line, and training built around your desk's real workflow. If you run an agency and want the time-savings without the compliance headache, we will map where AI fits your process and where it must not, and be honest about both.
